With traditional spreadsheet editors, like Excel, OpenOffice or others, you have to insert data and apply formulas in individual cells. Matrex brings a new approach to spreadsheet editing. Instead of focusing on single cells, the software allows you to work with entire data blocks, such as vectors and matrices. You can generate presentations or charts and make them visible when you want to, perform parallel calculations or filter, sort and group data, using SQL.

The software's setup package is a .jar file, so you should make sure that Java is installed on your computer. The installation procedure is straightforward and fast. You can use the program on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux platforms and you don't need powerful hardware to run it.

Once you start a new project, you may create matrices and functions and store them in separate tree structures, on the software's interface. Matrices may contain numbers, text, dates or boolean expressions. You can set the matrix's column and row numbers and insert values in each cells. Alternatively, you can import XLS files and extract matrices.

After creating your matrices or vectors, you can use them to create functions, charts, timers and presentations, in different tree structures, on the same interface. The software will present various options, on separate windows, depending on what type of element you wish to create. Although the available options may differ for each type of chart, presentation and so on, a common procedure is to select one or more matrices or vectors. You should know that Matrex is capable of generating 3D charts, but you need to install Java3D on your computer, if you wish to view them.

Working with Matrex is completely different from working with traditional spreadsheet editors. Even experienced Excel users may have to take their time to study the program, but it should not take long to get used to its functions. The main difference is that Matrex allows you to perform operations on entire data blocks, instead of individual cells. The software comes with an optional client-server architecture, which enables multiple users to share their sheets and delegate their operations to external CPUs.

Pros

The main advantage is the fact that Matrex focuses on vectors and matrices, instead of individual cells. You may create new matrices from the ground up, or extract them from existing XLS files. Data blocks can be used to generate various charts, including 3D charts, presentations and more.

Cons

The program's functionality is different from traditional spreadsheet editors, so you will need some time to study its functions. With its complexity and flexibility, Matrex will change the way you work with spreadsheets.
